Abstract
Objective: Growing water scarcity and the increasing challenges of sustainable water resource management have underscored the need to better understand citizens’ water consumption culture and conservation behaviors. Such understanding provides valuable insights for designing effective water demand management policies and promoting sustainable water use. Accordingly, this study aimed to evaluate and analyze the water consumption culture among residents of Taft County, Iran.
Method: This study employed a descriptive–analytical research design based on a cross-sectional survey. Data were collected using the Water Conservation Questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS software. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were applied to evaluate citizens’ water conservation behaviors and assess the overall pattern of water consumption culture.
Results: The findings indicated that the residents of Taft County demonstrated a relatively high level of water conservation awareness and responsible water-use behaviors in their daily activities. The region’s arid climate and limited water resources were found to play an important role in shaping water conservation attitudes and practices. Approximately 75.8% of respondents reported consistently repairing faulty water fixtures, while 74.2% indicated that they promptly shut off the main water supply in the event of pipe leakage or failure. In addition, 31.0% of respondents strongly supported higher water tariffs as a means of increasing the perceived value of water resources, whereas water-wasting behaviors were reported by fewer than 4.2% of participants. These findings reflect a strong public willingness to adopt water conservation practices and support sustainable water management policies.
Conclusion: The study demonstrates that a relatively strong water consumption culture exists among residents of Taft County. Enhancing public awareness through educational programs and implementing appropriate policy measures can further strengthen water conservation behaviors and contribute to more effective water demand management and the sustainable use of water resources.

Introduction
Water scarcity has become a major global challenge due to rapid population growth, urbanization, climate change, and increasing water demand. These pressures are particularly severe in arid and semi-arid regions, where limited freshwater resources necessitate the adoption of sustainable water management strategies. In addition to improving water supply systems, effective management requires reducing water demand by encouraging responsible consumption behaviors among citizens.
Water consumption is influenced by various demographic, socioeconomic, environmental, and cultural factors. While technological advances can improve water use efficiency, long-term conservation largely depends on public awareness, environmental attitudes, and daily water-use practices. Therefore, understanding water consumption culture is essential for designing effective demand management policies and promoting sustainable water use.
Taft County, located in the arid region of central Iran, has long experienced water shortages and increasing pressure on its water resources. Under such conditions, evaluating citizens' water conservation behaviors and attitudes can provide valuable information for improving water management policies and public education programs. Despite the importance of this issue, limited research has comprehensively assessed the water consumption culture of residents in this region.
Accordingly, this study aimed to evaluate and analyze the water consumption culture among residents of Taft County using a questionnaire-based survey. The findings provide insights into citizens' awareness and water conservation behaviors and offer practical recommendations for strengthening public participation, improving water demand management, and supporting the sustainable use of water resources.
Method
This study employed a descriptive–analytical research design using a cross-sectional survey to evaluate the water consumption culture of residents in Taft County, Iran. The study population consisted of urban residents, and the required data were collected through a structured questionnaire on water conservation behaviors. The questionnaire included items assessing respondents’ awareness, attitudes, and daily practices related to water use and conservation.
After data collection, the questionnaires were reviewed to ensure completeness and consistency before analysis. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software. Descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, were used to summarize respondents’ characteristics and evaluate the overall level of water conservation behavior. In addition, appropriate analytical statistical methods were applied to examine the observed patterns and interpret the water consumption culture of the study population.
The findings were interpreted to assess the current status of water conservation awareness and practices among citizens and to identify behavioral tendencies that could support the development of more effective water demand management strategies and public education programs.
Results
The results indicated that the residents of Taft County exhibited a relatively favorable level of water conservation awareness and responsible water-use behavior. Most respondents reported adopting water-saving practices in their daily activities, reflecting a positive water consumption culture within the study area. The arid climate and limited water resources of the region appeared to have contributed to the development of conservation-oriented attitudes among residents.
The descriptive analysis showed that practical participation in water conservation was relatively high. Approximately 75.8% of respondents reported consistently repairing damaged water fixtures, while 74.2% stated that they immediately shut off the main water supply in the event of pipe leakage or breakage. In addition, 31.0% of participants strongly agreed that increasing water tariffs could enhance the perceived value of water and encourage more responsible consumption. Conversely, the proportion of respondents reporting behaviors inconsistent with water conservation was less than 4.2%, indicating a generally high level of commitment to sustainable water use.
Overall, the findings demonstrate that citizens possess an appropriate level of awareness and actively engage in water conservation practices. These results suggest that the existing positive attitudes toward water conservation provide a strong foundation for implementing educational initiatives and demand management policies aimed at improving the sustainable use of water resources.
Conclusion
This study demonstrated that the residents of Taft County have developed a relatively favorable water consumption culture and generally exhibit responsible water conservation behaviors. The findings indicate that public awareness, together with the region's arid climatic conditions, has played an important role in encouraging sustainable water-use practices. The high level of participation in water-saving activities reflects the community's readiness to support water demand management initiatives.
Although the overall results are encouraging, further improvements can be achieved through continuous public education, awareness campaigns, and appropriate policy measures that reinforce responsible water consumption. Strengthening cooperation between water authorities and local communities can further enhance conservation behaviors and contribute to the sustainable management of water resources. The findings of this study provide useful evidence for policymakers and water managers in designing effective strategies to improve water conservation and promote sustainable water use in regions facing water scarcity.
